The Bill Has Fallen

On Friday 11 September 2026, MPs voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill at second reading. 286 voted against. 270 voted in favour. A majority of 16.

The bill has fallen.

This result comes after years of campaigning by disabled people's organisations, alongside a wide coalition of allies, medical professionals, legal experts, faith communities, and many others who shared our concerns about the risks this legislation posed to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

Disability organisations came together in a way that was genuinely extraordinary.

That collective voice was heard.

We know this issue will return. Those who brought this bill have not gone away, and they will come back.

When they do, we will be ready.

But today, we can pause. We can take a breath.

And we can acknowledge what disabled people have achieved by working together and refusing to be ignored.
