The campaign to defeat Kim Leadbeater's Assisted Dying Bill was a success — but the fight isn't over.

A recent private members' ballot has given a number of MPs the opportunity to bring forward new assisted dying legislation. Several of those drawn are strong supporters of the bill. Not Dead Yet UK has already written to all seven. But a letter from a constituent carries far more weight than anything a campaign organisation can send.

If you live in any of the constituencies below, we need to hear from you.

The seven constituencies

  • New Forest West — Sir Desmond Swayne MP (Conservative)

  • Rochester and Strood — Lauren Edwards MP (Labour)

  • Kingswinford and South Staffordshire — Mike Wood MP (Conservative)

  • St Ives — Andrew George MP (Liberal Democrat)

  • Hinckley and Bosworth — Dr Luke Evans MP (Conservative)

  • Maldon — Sir John Whittingdale MP (Conservative)

  • Bournemouth West — Jessica Toale MP (Labour)

What we're asking

If you live in one of these areas, we'd like you to write to your MP — in your own name, as a constituent. We'll provide a template letter you can adapt in your own words. It takes about ten minutes, and it really matters.

A personal letter from someone in an MP's own constituency is one of the most effective things anyone can do. MPs take constituency correspondence seriously. Your voice — your story — carries weight that a campaign organisation simply cannot replicate.

You don't need to be a confident writer. You don't need to know the parliamentary detail. You just need to tell your MP, in your own words, why this matters to you.

(We hope to launch a new tool to make it even easier for you to contact your MP with concerns about any future assisted dying bill).

Get in touch

If you live in one of the constituencies listed above, please email us at hello@notdeadyetuk.org with the subject line "Constituency letter" and let us know which area you're in. We'll send you a template letter and any other support you need.

If you're not sure which constituency you're in, you can check at members.parliament.uk.

Why this matters

The Lords' scrutiny of the Leadbeater bill has been described by some as filibustering. We strongly disagree. The second chamber examined the bill at length because it needed to be examined — the safeguards were inadequate, and the implications for disabled and vulnerable people had not been properly addressed.

Legislation that changes the law on life and death deserves more than a Private Member's Bill can offer. And before Parliament debates assisted dying at all, there is an urgent case for properly funded palliative and social care — so that no one is contemplating ending their life because the care system has failed them.

These are the arguments we need your help to make. Please get in touch.
